Lena and Kassie had their first birthday on Monday October 15th. It's really funny how time works. Sometimes it seems like the year went by so fast, yet I distinctly remember feeling like time was standing still a lot this past year.
One Year ago, the day they were born, I had no idea someone so small could fight so hard. Boy did I learn fast just how hard and how long they could fight. I learned a lot of things after the girls were born. The most important: don't take anything for granted, your life can change tremendously in an instant.

Today they are one, so much fun, busy developing and changing everyday. Some times I think that if I blink I will miss something.

On Sunday we had a birthday party to celebrate their accomplishments. After all, we were told by a neurologist that with the extensive brain injuries from their intraventricular hemorrhages (IVH) that they probably would not survive until their first birthday. We didn't (couldn't) believe him, our girls were fighters right from the start, but that statement had always been in the back of our minds. We had to celebrate not only their birthday but the fact that we made it. It sounds funny but it's like a huge weight has been lifted now that they are one. Yet again they beat the odds.
To celebrate we had someof our family and friends over that have supported us during this past year. At one point we had 16 kids in our house, only our 4 were older than 7 and only 4 more were older than one. Yikes. I made a pink castle cake for the princesses and my Dad cooked a turkey dinner for all of us. We had a great time (so did the girls).

Happy Happy Birthday Girls!!!!!!
